Jail for £43k benefit thief

A Stretford man has been given a 10 month custodial sentence for dishonestly obtaining Income Support, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit amounting to £43,777.

On September 5, Gary Betts was sentenced at Trafford Magistrates’ Court.

At an earlier hearing on August 9, Betts pleaded guilty to obtaining benefit to which he was not entitled to, by failing to declare his correct income and capital details. As a result, he was overpaid benefit between April 1 2004 and January 3 2012.

Betts had relied on the benefits system for him and his family for almost 20 years.

Investigations showed that he was the owner of another property which he collected rent from, while claiming benefits on the basis that he was unemployed. His wife was also found to be driving a Range Rover Sport which had cost over £50,000.

On sentencing Betts, His Honour Judge Lakin explained that the offence was too serious to be suspended, given the fact that the defendant used the fraudulently obtained money to fund a luxurious lifestyle for him and his family.

The couple must also repay the benefits they dishonestly claimed.
