Benefit thief escapes jail as she is a mother

Sara Fawcett didn't tell Hull Council when she started living with her partner, and got a total of £37,828 in housing and council tax benefits she was not entitled to over three years. (h/t Dave)

Recorder Michael Smith said:
You now accept this was a thoroughly dishonest piece of behaviour. You failed to notify the authority of a change in your circumstances and received money you were not entitled to.

But I will always give consideration to the impact on children and locking you up would have a devastating impact on your children.
Mr Smith sentenced Fawcett to eight months' imprisonment but suspended the term for two years. She must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work in the community.
