£31k benefit thief gets off very lightly

A benefit cheat who falsely claimed £31,672 has been handed a suspended sentence. (h/t Dave)

Sally Sanderson-Newall, from Culcheth, pleaded guilty to benefit fraud at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on July 3 after claiming benefits as a single person when she was living with her partner.

Between January 2009 and July 2012, the 34-year-old falsely claimed £20,080 housing benefit and £2,584 council tax benefit from the council and £9,008 income support from the Department for Work and Pensions.

She was sentenced to eight weeks in prison suspended for one year, a 12 week curfew order from 8pm to 7am and has been ordered to repay the money.

She stole more than £30,000 over a period of three and a half years, and for this she just gets some temporary inconvenience.
