Adama Turay claimed she was living alone at her home in Etherley Road, Tottenham, when claiming for housing and council tax benefit and income support between April 2005 and July 2007.

In reality the fraudster was living with her husband, who was in employment.

The 38-year-old managed to claim £65,757 she was not entitled to.

Haringey Council officers investigated after receiving an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public and jointly prosecuted the cheat with the Department for Work and Pensions.

Earlier this month, Turay was sentenced to six months in prison at Wood Green Crown Court after being found guilty of four charges of dishonestly making a false statement when claiming benefits.

She was also ordered to repay the money.

Councillor Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for finance, said: "Benefits are rightly there for those who need them most and the council is determined to prosecute those who abuse the system.

"We will always investigate when we have reason to suspect that someone is claiming benefits illegally, and the council will always press for the strongest penalties."
