Benefit thief detected on Gok Wan show

A benefits cheat was caught out when he was spotted on Gok Wan’s show “How to Look Good Naked” supporting his “girlfriend” - who he claimed was his landlady. (h/t Dave)

Delroy Gocul, 39, failed to notify the council that he had entered into a relationship with landlady Antionette Furlonge, a declaration which would have meant he was no longer entitled to housing and employment benefits.

A housing benefits assessor from Walthamstow Forest council - who happened to be watching TV that night - spotted the fraudster, from Chingford Mount, on the programme, accompanying Miss Furlonge.

Gok Wan’s programme encourages women and their partners to accept their body issues by taking part in a naked fashion shoot.

Gocul conned the council out of £14,379 in housing and council tax benefit and £4,924 in job seekers allowance over from March 2010 to November 2011.

Gocul was sentenced at Thames Magistrates Court to a 12 month Community Order with 120 hours unpaid work and ordered to attend Skills for Life education training. The Council was awarded £250 towards costs.

Councillor Mark Rusling, cabinet member for economic development and corporate resources, said:
Bare-faced cheek seems to be the appropriate phrase to describe the behaviour of this individual.

Ripping off the public purse to the tune of nearly £20,000 is pretty despicable, but it almost beggars belief for him to then flaunt his relationship on the telly and expect to get away with it.
