Jail eventually for £100k benefit thief

A 36 year-old woman from Yiewsley has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for fraudulently claiming over £100,000 in benefits.

A joint investigation by Hillingdon Council and the Department for Work and Pensions found that Sarah-Jane Bonner, real name Mrs Sarah Weller, of Royal Lane, failed to declare that she was living with her husband who was working full time and earning over £30,000.

When interviewed about this matter in October 2011, Bonner denied living with her partner but when presented with evidence she admitted that he was living with her full time.

Bonner claimed income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit from 1994 as a lone parent in relation to the property she rented from Hillingdon Council. She was sentenced on 24 January 2013 at Isleworth Crown Court.

Garry Coote, Hillingdon Council's Fraud Investigation Manager, said:
We're always pleased when a benefit cheat is caught - after all it's your money they are stealing. I'm always surprised that we still find people brazen enough to defraud honest taxpayers of tens of thousands of pounds.
