Taxpayers fleeced

A mother from Gravesend who falsely claimed more than £20,000 in benefits has been handed a suspended jail sentence.

Rakotomanga Andrianavony of Peacock Street claimed £20,466 in income support, housing and council tax benefits.

Dartford Magistrates Court heard on February 1 that the 42-year-old had failed to declare her partner was living with her and was employed.

The money was then paid on the basis of declarations that she was a single mother between July 2008 and March 2010.

But evidence obtained by Gravesham Council showed her partner was linked to her address through his employer and banks.

She made a full admission during her interview with the council.

Andrianavony admitted three charges of failing to promptly declare changes in circumstances to Gravesham Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

She told the court she was “very ashamed and sorry for what had happened.”

As well as being handed a 180 day jail sentence, suspended for two years, Andrianavony was ordered to repay the amount she had claimed.
