Benefit thief fined after sub-letting council home

A Spencers Wood woman who failed to declare that she had moved in with her new husband and sub-let her council property has been prosecuted by Wokingham Borough Council.

Toni Johnson, formerly Bull, was ordered to complete a 12-month community order of 120 hours unpaid work when she appeared at Reading Magistrates' Court on January 13.

She must also pay compensation to the council of £500 in respect of the sub-let and contribute £100 towards the council’s costs. She is also required to pay back the benefit she fraudulently claimed.

A joint investigation between Wokingham Borough Council and the Department for Work and Pensions revealed that Johnson had failed to declare her marriage when claiming for housing benefit, council tax benefit and pension credit and continued to receive money based on her single status.

She also failed to hand back her council property, also in Clements Close, after she vacated, instead choosing to sub-let it.

The sub-letting charge was prosecuted under The Fraud Act 2006.

The maximum penalty available under this Act is 10 years imprisonment.
