Light sentences for substantial benefit frauds

Irene Lofthouse from Oldham claimed almost £35,000 over nine years in incapacity benefit, income support, and Disability Living Allowance while she was working. She received a four-month sentence, suspended for two years, will be subject to supervision by the probation service for 12 months and faces a three-month nightly curfew.

Meanwhile, Shahgufta Ahmed, from Peterborough, was overpaid £21,793 over a six-year period, after failing to tell the DWP she was working. The court ordered her to pay the money back, carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the next year and pay £100 costs.

Let's not forget that putting them in prison costs a lot of money and takes up spaces that violent offenders can be put in.

Perhaps much longer community work sentences are required as a deterrent?
