Immorality in the benefits system

I don't mean that the benefits system rewards sexual immorality, I mean that it encourages people to cheat, as IDS is pointing out:
Britain's ‘crazy’ welfare system is turning committed young couples into fraudsters because getting married or living together means they will take a drastic cut in income....

So, instead of seeing their living standards plummet, many co-habiting couples on benefits are deceiving the State by pretending to live at different addresses.
It is absolutely wrong for the benefits system to put temptation in people's way. What's more, it's serious temptation in relation to the amounts of money they have legitimately.

It's similar to the failure to get government databases communicating.

It is just wrong for a lumbering state to put temptation in struggling people's way.

Doesnt self declaring your income also "encourage people to cheat"? I dont have that luxury as i'm P.A.Y.E.

If everybody paid their fair share of tax, then everyone could pay less tax. That would save far more money than benefit fraud.

Many of the people here are also involved in tax avoidance as well as benefit fraud, but that aspect of fraud is never commented on.

When you say "tax avoidance" (legal), do you mean "tax evasion" (illegal), such as working for cash in hand?

I imagine cash in hand is very, very hard to police. At least with state benefits there's an audit trail!
